Township and Rural Support

Often MSMEs in township and rural areas lack the knowledge needed to raise funding. Most do not understand the funding landscape, what the different types of finance are, which of these fit their funding need, and what the qualifying criteria are.

Overview

The funding landscape

Different and relevant funding instruments for township and rural areas include blended finance which emanated from the former Black Business Supplier Development Programme, the Cooperatives Development Support Programme (CDSP), the Shared Economic Infrastructure programme, the Informal and Micro Enterprise Development Programme (IMEDP) and Township and Rural Enterprise Programme (TREP), managed by the former Small Enterprise Finance Agency (sefa).

Given its employment potential and empowerment of young people, there is a need to revitalise the informal sector in the township and rural areas.
